time changes everything...

(click photos to enlarge)
Good morning readers,

It seems that I just can't get tired of wearing dresses. Even with today being cooler (and what a nice surprise that was this morning) they're just so easy to wear and for the most part they make me feel good. It's still strange to think that 4 years ago I was not what you would call a dress person. Or a shoe person. Or really a clothes person at all, to be honest. I was just into music and my uniform was a band shirt, jeans, and flip flops. Style? Not so high on my personal list.
Anyway, let's move on to the shoes. They're actually what I styled my outfit around. I had been wanting a pair of Sofft shoes and when I saw these on 6pm I decided to take the plunge, and today marks their debut. The heel is a little uncomfortable because it's higher than I'm used to, and the strap is rubbing my toe into blister-ville, but I think they will be comfortable with a couple more wears. Unfortunately I expected them to be perfect right out of the box, which is foolish I suppose.
I hope you all have a great hump day!

what you don't know won't kill you...

Good morning all,

I always feel like I'm in a better mood when I wear yellow. It's too bad I only own a couple of yellow clothing items. I needed an extra boost today because I'm going to be fairly busy at work. What's your feel-good color?

(this was my first attempt this morning-a perfect headless shot, no cropping needed!)

I got this shrug back in May during Lane Bryant's extra 40% sale. I originally bought it to wear with the dress below (which I also got on clearance), but I'm finding the shrug to be quite versatile (and comfortable).

I hope you all have a lovely Tuesday!

this time next week I hope to be asleep...

Waking up is so difficult and shopping is so easy (for me at least)...The Loft was having an extra 40% everything in stores, Torrid took an extra 50% off their clearance, Target had "buy more save more" deal, B. Makowsky bags were 60% off at 6pm, and temptation was just everywhere! I actually went to both Loft stores in my area (only to find they've gotten even more stingy with the availability of their larger sizes, which I didn't think was possible) but I managed to find a few cute things. And I may have bought another B. Makowsky bag. I wonder if they have therapy for a bag addiction...

In the midst of the sale shopping D and I went to a party on Saturday night, and I managed to get some pictures taken before we left.

Today, instead of wearing my weekend purchases I put on something I had picked out for last week. This cardigan has a silly pattern, but I love it. I first saw this cardigan at a CAbi Outlet in NJ last summer, and when I saw the price (something like $75) I decided the crazy bird cardigan was not for me. Recently I saw someone selling it on ebay with a "buy it now" or best offer price, and I got it for $14.50! CAbi stuff is usually very expensive, and I was excited to get it for such a great price. :) Do you all have any good ebay stories?

This is the last thing I'll ramble on about, I promise. :)  I finally got a pedicure this weekend, and I decided to paint my nails as well. I got some new colors from Zoya with their exchange program (you trade your old nail polishes for theirs and they'll match you bottle for bottle, and you pay $3.50 for shipping and handling for each bottle-click here for more info). Since I was only paying for shipping I decided to experiment and get colors I normally wouldn't wear, like sky blue, pale yellow, and this shimmery gold. I went with a sort of pinky coral on my toes (not from Zoya). Do you all have a favorite shade of nail polish?

Hope this Monday goes quickly for you all!

stadium love...

(ring photo credit)

Good morning everyone,

Do you all follow sports? I don't follow any at all, but this world cup stuff has many of my coworkers more riled up than usual. It's quite amusing to watch and listen to them talk...
One of my soccer loving coworkers was actually the inspiration for this outfit. She had taken a zebra print skirt and pulled it up higher on her waist while tucking in her top, and it looked like a really cute dress. Since I found myself struggling with how to style this skirt, I decided to copy her. I wish I had chosen different shoes, but I love it otherwise :)

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

a belated anniversary...

(click photos to enlarge)
Hi all,

You know what came and went without one thought in my mind? It was excavatingkscloset's 1 year anniversary! I started posting blurry pictures on Sunday, June 21 (clearly the weekend pictures weren't a hit with me, see also: short hair). I think the actual picture taking has gotten a little more acceptable. Also, if you want to super zoom on the photos you can click on them, and then click the magnifying glass and it will get even larger (terrifying, isn't it?)

Thank you for taking the time to read the blog, and I hope to see another year come and go.

I got lost in a part of the woods...far from another. Cut the line between light and the good...

(click photos to enlarge)
Hiya all,

I thought I updated the blog for today when I actually haven't, so that's why I'm a little late :) It also looks like I have a few new followers, which always awes and amazes me, so thanks for dropping by!

I saw this open cardigan at T.J. Maxx a while back and convinced myself out of it. After I left I just couldn't get it out of my mind, but I understand that the stuff at TJ always changes, so I didn't set out trying to find it again figuring I'd just be disappointed. Then a few weeks ago I was in the same store and I spied it on the clearance rack in my size. I don't often feel like waiting pays off for me (I usually lose whatever it was I was thinking about or my size is long gone) but this time it worked! :) Now if only it weren't 90 degrees outside...I actually removed the belt before I left the house because I felt too weighed down in the heat.

I hope you all have a good Wednesday!

I told you I was brave but I lied...

(click photos to enlarge)
Good morning everyone,

I think I've mentioned this before but back in May of this year I bought a bunch of cardigans from Ann Taylor Loft when they were having their 40% off sale. Somehow I semi-forgot about this one. I loved it when I first saw it online, but at $60 it was a bit out of my price range. Then the sale came around and I got the last one in my size (at that particular store anyway). I decided to pair it with my new earrings, which I have been coveting since my aunt's Stella & Dot jewelry party back in April. They retail for $49 (plus shipping) and I just couldn't justify that, so I found them on ebay for a little less.
So while I was going through my overstuffed closet last night (and rediscovering "forgotten" items) I started to think about the amount of clothing I have acquired over the past couple of years. I like to think of myself as being fairly organized, but I do have a lot of clothes for one person (and this isn't even touching on my shoes). I have my 4 sizes ago clothing (which in my defense most are in the basement waiting to be sold on Ebay), I have 1 and 2 sizes ago, there are the current sizes, and then I have a few things that are too big yet still have a place in my closet. Rationally I know that I should get rid of the things that don't fit, but I seem to be unable to let go of them. I keep thinking that one day, I'm going to be XXX pounds and I will fit in to those size XX jeans/pants/tops. I know that it's not healthy to keep things that don't fit, especially if they're too small and you see them every day, but part of me isn't ready to say goodbye. The other part of me wants to try everything on and get rid of anything that doesn't make me feel fabulous, perhaps while eating cheesecake. Do you all ever find yourself in this position?
Stuffed closets and delicious cheesecake aside, I'd like to take a moment to thank my wonderful boyfriend D for taking the pictures today. It's so much easier when you have someone climbing on chairs in the backyard to get a good shot. :)

I died so I could haunt you...

(click photo to enlarge)
Hi all,

This past weekend went by way too quickly. I feel like I got a lot of things done, but it's never long enough for my liking :)

Today's outfit is rather casual for a Monday, but it's so hot and gross outside that I find myself lacking motivation to get dressed. Does the heat screw you all up too? What do you do to beat the heat?

Striped top: Gap ($14, June 2010)
Black skinny pants: Ann Taylor Loft ($15, December 2009)
Black flats: Nine West Outlet ($20, July 2009)
Long necklace: H&M ($10, June 2010)

On a different note, remember the stuff I ordered from ASOS? Here are my thoughts.*

So, I ordered 4 things total: 3 tops and 1 dress. Let's talk about the dress first.
I loved this dress when it first went online and I admired it for months. The combination of pink/black and the rosette detailing was lovely looking. I thought it would look great with a pair of black tights and booties. Sadly, the dress and I were not meant to be. The colors and the rosettes looked just as good in person as it did on the website, but the length barely covered my behind. I did like that the back of the dress has smocking, so it stretched to accommodate my chest, but the length was scandalous. It would be helpful to know how tall the model is in the pictures to give reference.

Next up are the three tops I ordered.

So let's talk about the two white shirts, one with cute foxes and the other with a peacock. I think the designs are different and modern looking. The colors are much more vibrant in person (especially with the peacock shirt) and the length is great, particularly if you want to wear leggings as pants (I'm still not there). My problem is with the width of the tees. I know they're supposed to be over-sized, but I ordered the fox tee from their "straight" line and the peacock tee from their CURVE line, and both were huge. I'm either going to end up belting them, or wearing them as sleepshirts (I really do love the design that much).

The last top I ordered: sheer black with a picture of a forest. Again, the colors are very nice looking. Unlike the two white shirts, this shirt is very narrow (and I got it in the same CURVE size as the peacock shirt). Also, the black is almost completely sheer. The forest on the front makes it ok, but you can see everything from the back. I will definitely be wearing a black tank top under this.

So my final thoughts on ASOS: Their sizing seems to be rather inconsistent (and yes, I measured myself and went by their size chart before ordering). It would be helpful to know the model's height, especially if there is a "catwalk" video. I was happy with the materials but I would have to really fall in love with something to even consider ordering from them again. I like that you can return items overseas (at your own expense), but for me it wasn't worth it to return just the dress.

*I wrote this review on my own after purchasing the above items with my hard-earned cash, and was not paid/motivated/asked by ASOS to do so.

the crampettes...

(click photos to enlarge)
Good morning strangers,

I had a good post planned for yesterday but I ended up staying home. Today I wanted to be as comfortable as possible so I decided to wear this new top I got on clearance from Lane Bryant and my favorite jeans. Earlier this week I went to LB to take advantage of my $25 coupon and they had some great stuff on clearance. Plus all clearance items were an extra 40% off. I do think that they can be expensive to begin with, but if you wait for their sales and you have a coupon there are some great deals to be had. You just have to be patient.

The shoes are also new and I've been excited to wear them (even though I got them last month). Do you ever buy something and find yourself so excited about whatever it is that you bought that you don't know what to wear it with? I mean, how can someone be undecided about styling brown sandals? The braid pattern reminds me of how my best friend's mother used to do our hair for church on Sundays. That brings back some painful memories (her braiding technique, not the church part. Well, mostly the braid...) To keep me honest I should share that I also bought these in black. In my defense, the black ones were on clearance :)

I haven't forgotten about my ASOS purchase. I'll be touching on that next week. I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

There's no glitter in the gutter. There's no twilight galaxy...

Hi all,

I'm not really feeling this outfit today. Skirts aren't really my favorite piece of clothing so I haven't worn this black skirt in a very long time. Skirts tend to turn around on me while I'm walking, or take a hike up towards my chest, or fly up with the slightest breeze, and it's much harder to wear any sort of shaping item under them so my chances of showing off my underwear are much higher. Do you all have any of these problems? I will mention that this skirt has two redeeming qualities. 1) It's not a plain black (there's a subtle pinstripe in there I swear) and 2) it has great pockets.
On the other hand, the top is a new favorite of mine. I got it on super clearance from Bloomingdales and it's by Rachel Pally, which to me means comfortable (usually expensive) clothing. I had never bought anything from Bloomingdales before due to the expense factor but I'm glad I got this shirt. Besides, who can say no to cute little birds? Pictured below is the same print on a dress (but mine has gray instead of "honey"). (credit)

I hope you all have a great middle-of-the-week day!

hang me out to dry...

(click photos to enlarge)

Hello all,

I was running very late yesterday so I didn't have a chance to make an entry out of yesterday's outfit. After I got dressed I noticed that I was having some sort of allergic reaction to something on my chest, and of course I was wearing a v-neck dress so I had to go searching for something that covered my chest without killing me in the summer heat. By the time I found a suitable Monday outfit (and realized almost everything I own is a scoop or v-neck on top) I threw up my hair up and ran out the door.

Today the redness seems to be a little lighter (I still have no idea what caused it). I think it's not very noticeable with the necklace over it, and as an added bonus I get to welcome the return of my favorite maxi dress from last year. I lovelovelove this pattern (which popped up on Cynthia over the weekend) but I find myself puzzled with how to style it. I usually throw a brown cardigan over it and call it a day, but today I went with something a little different and I like the result. :) How would you all style it?

I hope you all have a wonderful Tuesday!

Black-Out Challenge Day 5: Spring has sprung all over me...

(click photo to enlarge)
Maybe this makes me a bit of a nerd but I saved this outfit for today because it's possibly the most spring-like item in my possession. And yes, this is summer, but to me spring and summer are pretty similar because they're both hot and I'm not really a fan of either season.

I actually bought this skirt last year and never wore it. I'm not a skirt lover, but this one sits at a good spot on my waist and I love the length. The fabric is a very lightweight denim, but it doesn't seem to wrinkle, which I adore.

Since I don't often take weekend outfit pictures this will likely be the last of my attempts at the black-out challenge. I've really enjoyed the challenge because it made me put more thought into my outfits (and I thought I already did). It has also made me realize that I want to throw a black cardigan on 4 out of 5 work days (and believe me, I own enough to wear one a day). I know the black cardi is a security blanket for me, and this challenge has made me realize that there are other colors that can make me feel fabulous.

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Black-Out Challenge Day 4: The return of the maxi dress

(click photos to enlarge)
(click photos to enlarge)

First I'd like to take a moment and honor the dress from yesterday. I have never received so many compliments from both bloggers and real-life strangers in my life. I went out during lunch and I had random people stopping me to ask about the dress and where they could get one. Don't get me wrong, I usually dress for myself and if I get a compliment throughout the day then it's icing on the cake. But yesterday was really phenomenal. So I just want to say thank you to that dress (and the LJ user that sold it!)

Moving on to today's dress. I'm so happy long dresses still seem to be "in fashion" this summer, although I would still wear mine even if they weren't. I mean, a regular dress is great but a maxi dress is even better because whatever your leg situation is, it doesn't matter! :) And I cannot lie....I had another outfit picked out for today and I had planned on wearing those great shoes from yesterday. Well, the shoes broke my feet. Well, at least they rubbed them too much so I definitely wanted to give my feet a little break. Today is yet another day I'm glad my work environment is fairly casual.

I hope you all have a great Thursday!

Black-Out Challenge Day 3: Going vintage!

Can I tell you all how much I love today's outfit? Someone put this vintage dress up for sale at fatsionxchange and I snagged it as soon as I saw the leaf print. Then I couldn't decide what belt to use with it, and I tried this coral one on a whim and love it! And let me not forget the shoes. They're so sweet looking I sort of want to eat them! They're also fairly comfortable (and vegetarian leather!)

I hope you all have an pleasantly eventful Wednesday!

Black-Out 2010 Day 2: Debuting a new dress..

(click photos to enlarge)

How do you all like the new dress? I've had this picked out to wear a couple times but this is the first time I haven't changed my mind at the last minute. It fits into the blackout challenge quiet well :)

The dress is the perfect length for me to wear with flats, although they do get covered up. So here they are :) They are incredibly comfortable and at their sale price, I wish more colors had been available in my size!

Ebates (this is my referral link; if you're not signed up you can use it and I'll love you forever) had a drawing for a Sex and the City 2 laptop and the winner was announced yesterday. In order to win you had to submit a "fashionable" photo of yourself on their facebook page. I didn't win, but my picture was included in the blog entry. I'm not gonna lie, I was pretty excited when I saw it :) I included the image collage below. To see the full blog entry from ebates click here.
